This walk from the hamlet of Sneaton is 8 and a half miles long and involves 352 metres of ascent and descent. We will leave the village and cross fields and a valley to reach the village of Stainsacre. After crossing the A171, we will head towards the Whitby Fog Signal Station, before following the Cleveland Way Coastal Path above Saltwick Bay and on to Whitby Abbey. We will then descend the 199 Steps, walk through Old Whitby, cross the swing bridge and follow the west bank of the River Esk upstream, before crossing the railway line, going under the A171 and reaching the Larpool Viaduct. Once over the viaduct, we will descend into Cock Mill Wood, before a long pull up to Sneaton, following the Monks' Walk.
The walk is mainly on good paths and tracks, although there might be a few muddy sections and the stones on the Monks' Trod can be quite slippery, which is why we are going up, instead of down it. There are half a dozen stiles in the first section of the walk and there could be cows in the fields leading up to Stainsacre.
Refreshments will be available afterwards in the Beacon Farm Ice Cream and Tea Room (we might also be in there for breakfast before the walk).
