Tram-based walk

Leader: Paul G, meeting at Walk Start

Meet Point: On the tram platform, at Piccadilly station. Alternatively, meet the group on the tram, or at the Walk Start at Ashton-under-Lyne Metrolink stop. Drivers please note you will need a tram and bus to return from Shaw to Ashton at the end of the walk.

Transport to Walk Start: 09:47 tram from Manchester Piccadilly (final destination Ashton-under-Lyne).

Suggested Ticket: Metrolink Off Peak 1-Day Travelcard for zones 1-4 £4.90

Walk Start: Ashton-under-Lyne Metrolink at 10:30.

Waypoints: Turner Lane, Ashton/Oldham Greenway, Alt Hill Lane, Alt Hill Road, Mill Brow, River Medlock, Abbey Hills Road, Holts Lane, Lees Road, Dunham Street, Mill pond, Culvert Street, Strinesdale Reservoir, Higher Count Hill, Haven Road, Counthill Road, Turf Pit Lane, Whitehall, Ripponden Road, Millennium Green, Penny Bank.

Return Services: From Shaw & Crompton: Trams to central Manchester every 6 minutes.

Extra: Toilets near walk start at Ashton Bus Station (fee applies to use them). Possible pub stop at the Bulls Head, and this will be the only toilet option en route. Please do not bring your dog (apart from registered assistance dogs).

This walk starts from Ashton along an old railway line then follows the Medlock to Waterhead.

We then continue to Strinesdale Reservoir before climbing Count Hill and dropping down through the outskirts of Sholver to Pennybank.

The route is mainly on paved gravel paths, but there are a few narrow muddy sections close to the riverbank.
