Overview

This is a walk of three parts. You are welcome to join the whole experience or just dip in to parts. All times below are approximate.
Part I: Guided Tour of the Henge Monument (Cost of £6pp to National Trust) (distance = 1 mile)
(10.00 – 11.30ish) This will be a guided tour around the Henge explaining its Neolithic origins, rediscovery in more recent times and archaeological reconstruction undertaken by Alexander Keiller in the 1920s and 1930s. I will do the tour I cover weekly as a National Trust volunteer – the information is all based on material authorised by the National Trust. If you have ever wondered what lies behind the stones, here is a chance to find out (no, it wasn’t a space port!).
The fee of £6 goes to the NT - apologies but price rises to £6 on March 1. Please bring the exact amount. I will collect at start and deposit at the ticket office at the end of the walk.
Lunch break (11.30-12.15ish) Great café! Lots of benches! And loos!
Part II: (Distance =  6 miles) (12.15 – 2.45) A walk up to Windmill Hill and back with minimal talking from me (as if!)! Brief coffee stop.
Part III: (Distance =  1.75 miles) (3.00 – 3.45) An optional extension along the stones of West Kennet Avenue and then up onto Waden Hill for the best view of Silbury Hill in the area. Return by the river to the car park.

Park at the NT car park on the road in from Beckhampton – a short walk to the barn. Free for members, parking fee otherwise (see NT website for prices – these are changing from 1st March). Or you can park for free in the parking area by the gallops just off the A4 coming in from Calne but give yourself 30 mins to walk in. Meet outside the Barn at Avebury by the café and ticket office – buildings will be closed until 11.00 so don’t plan on a coffee!
