Overview

The Great North Wood was a natural oak woodland that started three miles (4.8 km) south-east of central London and scaled the Norwood Ridge. At its full extent, the wood's boundaries stretched almost as far south as Croydon and as far north as Camberwell.

This is the second of two brisk walks that take you through as many of the remaining fragments of The Great North Wood as are publicly accessible.

This section will visit Dulwich Park, where we will probably have lunch, Crystal Palace and a collection of smaller fragments of the Great North Wood plus a number of other green spaces that are not original woodland, but are still well worth a visit

I intend to go a drink at the aptly named The Great North Wood pub after finishing the walk, I hope you can join me.

Great North Wood fragments visited:

  • Nunhead Cemetery
  • One Tree Hill
  • Dulwich Park
  • The Horniman Nature Trail
  • Sydenham Hill Wood
  • Dulwich Wood
  • West Norwood Cemetery
  • Hillcrest Estate Wood
  • Norwood Park
  • Dulwich Upper Wood
  • Crystal Palace Park

Although an urban walk, there are lots of steps with an total elevation gain of 310m.

We will probably stop for lunch in Dulwich Park, where there is a cafe. However it cannot be guaranteed that the cafe will be open so a back up packed lunch is advised.

Travel

Take the 10:58 from London Bridge arrives at New Cross Gate at 11:04

Meet at New Cross Gate Station (Zone 2). While waiting for the group to gather in the station entrance look across New Cross Road to the trees in the railway cutting on the other side of the road. They are the northern most remnants of the Great North Wood.

Alternatively take the Overground Weaver Line which goes from Highbury and Islington to both Crystal Palace and West Croydon and runs at least once every ten minutes.

West Norwood Station (Zone 3) is technically the end point, but Tulse Hill Station (Zone 3) is a few minutes walk away and there are numerous buses heading in all directions.

The finishing time is an estimate only and will be dependent on a number of factors, such as weather, the speed at which the group walks and number of stops we take.

No booking required.
