We start and finish the walk at Alton. A Hampshire walk through woodlands and fields, but the end of the walk is urban as we have to walk through Alton to get back to the station. We will be walking on footpaths, bridleways and across fields, including some sections of The Hanger Way and the Writers Way.
The terrain is undulating with one steep climb out of Selborne which includes steps. We will pass through Selborne the home of the naturalist Gilbert White and Chawton the home of Jane Austen. There will not be time to visit either of these museums.
At the time of the recce it was mainly dry underfoot, but if there is significant rain before the walk there will be mud in some places. Most of the walking is footpaths but you may wish to bring walking poles for some parts.
There are only a few stiles but some were in a bad state of repair.
Please use toilets on the train, although there are toilets at Alton station. There are 3 toilets in Selborne (approximately 3/4 of the way round the walk) which were open at the time of the recce, which we can stop at if necessary.
Please bring a packed lunch and snacks, as lunch will be a picnic along the way.
No dogs as there are sheep in the fields that were pregnant and some with lambs.
There are no exit points.
