Join us for the fourth and perhaps prettiest stage of the Wealdway, from Ashurst (Kent) to Uckfield, continuing our journey which eventually goes all the way to Eastbourne on the South Coast! The walk will be brisk (2.5-3 miles/hour). Today's walk follows the Wealdway through the upper Medway valley, up through the Ashdown Forest with spectacular views and down through wooded glades.
From Ashurst station, we follow the Sussex Border Path for a brief distance through green fields, we pick up the Wealdway and follow it along the River Medway and then into the Five Hundred Acre Wood of Winnie the Pooh fame, which leads us to and across the Ashdown Forest with spectacular views over the Sussex Weald. Leaving the forest, we descend through wooded glades and across fields to Uckfield, from where trains return to London.
We will stop for lunch overlooking a spectacular view from the Ashdown Forest at about 12.30 - please bring a packed lunch. There are no toilets en-route but plenty of natural options should nature call.
At the end of the walk, for those that wish to stay on for a drink, there is an option to stop off at The Station pub close to Uckfield station.
Note: While moderate overall, the walk includes quite a few stiles and extended uphill sections.
