A moderately paced walk through attractive countryside on level, or gently undulating terrain. Once out of the Garden City, the route takes us through the landscaped parkland of Brocket Hall and Lamer House on our way to the village of Ayot St Lawrence, with its two interesting churches, the home of George Bernard Shaw and the Brocket Arms-an inn built in the 14th century. The optional entrance to Shaw's large garden is free to NT members or £5. After lunch in Ayot we make our way to Ayot Place and Ayot green, returning to the Garden City through Sherrardspark Wood.

Toilets: Howard Shopping Centre at the exit to the station and the lunchtime pub.
Train: Kings Cross 9.27, Finsbury Park 9.33 (Great Northern train to Cambridge)
