This is a 12 mile walk in the High Weald starting from The Vineyard at Lamberhurst, which saviours the outstanding features of the Scotney Castle Estate, as well as a section alongside Bewl Water, the largest reservoir in the south east.
There are a few, steady ascents and descents, during our exploration of this beautiful part of the Weald, but there is much to enthuse over on this route, so you won't want to miss it.
From the Vineyard, we begin by heading into the village centre, across a sports field, before passing through a hedge and over the lush fairways of the golf course, so watch out for flying balls!. We ascend to the north of Scotney Castle, whereas last July (in the rain), we went south through the estate parkland, so the views on this walk will be different, from there it is through Kilndown Wood and into Kilndown.
More wooded areas follow and on reaching the busy A21, there is a very small stretch alongside the road, before we drop down to Bewl Water. When we reach the waters edge, we join the Sussex Border Path (SBP), which is also used by those on two wheels, so take care, as there could be lots of lycra clad cyclists whizzing past us. At far side of the Dam Wall, we leave the SBP, continuing close to the water and the Visitor Centre, where the facilities can be used for those in need.
We will most likely have our picnic lunch overlooking the water, after which our circuit once again joins the SBP, which we later leave, when climbing away from the water. We continue northward, passing Maitlands & Owls Castle, on a mix of different terrain and countryside, to eventually arrive back at the Vineyard, post walk drinks anyone?
