This walk starts at St Peters (New) Church, Martindale. Unusually we start with a downhill section to pick up the path that heads up the spine of Steel Knotts to the summit of Pikeawassa (Wainwright) we then continue onwards over two lesser summits, Brownthwaite Crag and Gowk Hill (both Birketts). Next we descent down the lovely Fusedale Valley to Howtown where we pick up the Ullswater Way and follow it around the base of Hallin Fell (another Wainwright) alongside the lake. We eventually pick up the path that the leads back up to the shoulder of the Fell before turning left up a steep grassy path and heading to the Summit. As this climb is quite late in the walk we will ascend at an easy pace, taking breaks as and when required. Finally we descend via the well walked grassy path directly back to the Church.
There are a couple of very short points on the ascent of Steel Knotts, which although they cannot exactly be considered a scramble, may require "hands on".
Although I have classed the walk as moderate, there are a couple of steepish ascents. We will walk at a moderate pace.
