From Lowther Castle main car park we pass in front of Lowther Castle before entering woodland and descending to the Lowther river. Our route follows the banks of the Lowther river and opens out into parkland and fields heading towards the small village of Helton. We pass through Helton to reach Askham Fell, now with our route clearly marked as the "Ullswater Way".
Askham Fell is vast and fancinating with naturally occuring shake holes and ancient stone circles. Following the Ullswater Way, we approach the Cockpit stone circle. Weather permitting, there are views across Ullswater and to the Helvellyn range.
From the Cockpit we descend the fell, following the Ullswater Way, to the beautiful and historic village of Askham. Passing through the village we cross the Lowther river again and back through the woods to Lowther Castle.
The route is on well marked bridleways, footpaths with short sections of road. Bridleways and footpaths can get muddy. Potentially livestock in fields and on fell.
Cafe and Toilets at Lowther Castle and Askham village.
