Overview

If you’re a woman, your best chance at becoming a statue is to be a mythical or allegorical figure, a famous virgin, royal or nude’ (Caroline Criado-Perez).

Feminist journalist and activist Caroline Criado Perez did a gender audit of all the statues in the UK in 2016 and of the 925 statues listed in the UK national database of the Public Monuments and Sculpture Association, ‘a mere 2.7 per cent are of historical, non-royal women’.

There are more statues of animals in London than of named women, an audit by Art UK found in 2021.

Please join me on a fascinating narrated urban half day walking tour of statues (and plaques) honouring the lives and achievements of just a few remarkable women in Central London. At each stop along the route, I will be sharing interesting information about each woman.

This tour will be delivered in two parts and this is the second one. You can choose to attend one or both of the half days as it will cover different women.

Places on each tour must be booked through Eventbrite (see below) as tours are limited to 20 spaces.

We will meet at 10am and estimated finish time is 1pm. Location will be confirmed to those who have been allocated a place.

There are no planned breaks but please bring refreshments/snacks to meet your own needs.

Toilet stops are possible at the beginning and end of the walks.

Exact timings are hard to judge as we are walking through busy central London streets and also dependent on group size and interest shown.

There may well have to be some adjustments along the way so please be prepared to be flexible.

Of course, there are plenty of opportunities to drop out with public transport options all along the route.

PLEASE NOTE PRIORITY WILL BE GIVEN TO MEMBERS OF THE RAMBLERS
