The High Weald Landscape Trail offers a captivating 95-mile journey through the counties of Sussex and Kent. The High Weald—designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty —remains a lush, diverse mix of woodlands, grasslands, heathlands, meadows and hammer ponds.
This is the third section of the trail, from East Grinstead to Tunbridge Well via Groombridge. The route quickly leads us onto the Forest Way, a disused railway line turned into a scenic nature trail.
We reach Forest Row and soon after the trail begins to climb gently into Ashdown Forest, and follow winding country lanes (linked to A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh stories) and Cotchford Farm, where Milne once lived, before arriving in Hartfield.
From here we follow sections of the old Withyham Railway Line, now a quiet countryside path. The trail meanders through woodland and across farmland, offering lovely views of rolling hills. Then the landscape then opens up before reaching Groombridge, known for its historic Groombridge Place Gardens. The trail follows rolling meadows before climbing towards Broadwater Warren, a beautiful nature reserve with heathland and wildlife.
As we approach Tunbridge Wells, the trail enters the town near The Pantiles, a historic colonnaded walkway famous for its Georgian architecture and cafés—an excellent place for refreshments should people want to do so, before reaching the train station.
Please bring a packed lunch. The walk will be brisk (2.5-3 miles per hour)
The terrain is undulating countryside, and some village roads, with occasional hills.
