A winter walk, starting at Roehead, above Pooley Bridge. We walk uphill onto the fell and visit the Cockpit, an ancient stone circle, then continue over Askham fell until we pass the monolith known as the Cop Stone, before descending through fields to reach the pretty village of Helton. From Helton we continue downhill to the bridge over the river Lowther, the hamlet of Whale and join the path towards Lowther castle and the beautiful village of Askham. Next we climb steadily up to Riggingleys Top and Heughscar hill, with wonderful views over Ullswater, before descending to the cars at Roehead.
The walk is on good paths and tracks, with some boggy sections, especially after rain. It will be done at a moderate pace. Dogs must be kept on a lead on the short sections of farmland owned by the Lowther estate.
