A lovely walk in Eden's portion of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, taking in farmland, moorland, local history and a nature reserve. We start in the village of Newbiggin on Lune and cross the A685 to begin the walk to Crosby Garrett via Brownber Hall and Bents farm, and beneath Nettle Hill. From Crosby Garrett we swing east and cross farmland to reach Smardale Hall and begin the return via the Nature reserve of Smardale Gill, crossing the viaduct, with glorious views to the south of the Scandale valley and the Howgills.
The walk is all on good paths and tracks, with a very short section on a quiet road in the middle, and will be done at a moderate pace. It may be muddy in parts, and there could be sheep or cows in some of the fields, so dogs must be kept on a lead. In the nature reserve we should see a wonderful variety of wild flowers.
