Overview

This walk is part of a project to visit every piece of common land* in London.

To say this walk covers Greenwich and Lewisham is a bit of a cheat as I have only been able to find one piece of common land in Lewisham and that one piece is Blackheath which it shares with Greenwich.

This walk will visit:

Greenwich

  • Bostall Heath and Woods
  • Winn's Common
  • Plumstead Common
  • Eltham Common
  • King George's Field
  • Woolwich Common
  • Kidbrooke Green Park
  • Blackheath Common (shared with Lewisham)

Lewisham

  • Blackheath Common (shared with Greenwich)

We will start at Abbey Wood station and head across in a westerly direction picking off commons as we go. The lunch stop will be at Oxleas Woods, which is not a common, but does have a nice cafe.

We will finish in Greenwich town centre.

The walk will be at a brisk pace.

There are toilets in Abbey Wood Station and at the lunch stop.

* I am defining common land to be any piece of land that is registered for the purposes of the Commons Act 2006, or is protected under separate local acts, such as Wimbledon and Putney Commons (which are protected under the Wimbledon and Putney Commons Act 1871). Using this definition not all pieces of land that are called commons are in fact commons and many of the pieces of common land are not called commons.

** I'm not altogether sure of the status of some of the pieces of land called "commons". I'm still trying to hunt down which ones that are not listed under the main act are covered by separate local acts.
